As increasing numbers of weddings take place in historic buildings rather
than churches, we have found more and more brides looking to theme their
special day in keeping with the wedding venue. This does not necessarily
mean dressing all your guests in period costume, although that can be
great fun, but rather enhancing the character of the building while keeping
your own style, frequently with coloured or historical wedding dresses.
One of our brides was married in a Welsh Castle and decided to create
an elegant Tudor feel. She used huge church candles and plenty of Ivy
on the reception tables, her invitations were exquisitely illuminated
with the initials of the couple in green and gold in the style of an ancient
manuscript. Her Tudor style gown was tightly corseted dark green and ivory
damask with pearl embroidery and, rather than a bouquet, she carried a
single ivory candle.
One romantic couple asked guests to wear something red on their special
day, even if it was only a pair of shoes. They made deep scarlet roses
the focal point of table and freestanding displays. Her red corset bodice
looked stunning with a simple ivory skirt and huge bouquet of true love
Other themes have included a Jules Verne inspired Victorian space adventurers
wedding, held in baroque grandeur at Elvastone Castle, complete with three
tier wedding cake of a moon, star and rocket! The gown was a delicious
Victorian confection of pale pink silk and white tulle with iridescent
PVC strapless corset overlaid with tulle embroidered with silver stars.
Possibilities include "A Midsummer's Night Dream" for an outdoors
wedding, with a delicate silver fairy tiara, little bridesmaids as fairy
attendants and a bouquet of Pease blossom. Add a twinkling Ice Palace
for a winter wedding with white fur cape and muff, ice sculptures and
plenty of mulled
